WAIT TIMES
In September 2004 the Government of Ontario announced a new focus on reducing surgical
and diagnostic imaging wait times. Their goal was to improve public access to surgeries and procedures and create a system of accountability through transparent reporting of wait time information.
Within a month of the announcement, they launched their Wait Times Strategy website. From there they began reporting wait times for five key services (cancer surgery, cardiac procedures,
cataract surgery, hip and knee replacements, RI and CT scans). In 2007 Ontario became
the first province in Canada to also report paediatric wait times. The following year saw the
inclusion of other orthopaedic surgeries as well as ophthalmologic and general surgery to
the list.
To date there have been more than 13.2 million visits to the wait times site (Ministry of
Health, 2010).
Currently the Government of Ontario tracks 14 adult health care services and 10 paediatric services.
