THE FRASER INSTITUTE
The Fraser Institute is a Canadian think tank organization that publishes reports based on research of topics such as education and healthcare. Their report “Longer Than Ever” claims that in 2011, wait times had increased to 19 weeks from 18.2 weeks the preceding year and were actually higher than in 1993 (Barua,Rovere & Skinner, 2011).
The report further breaks down information by stating that a 6.4 week wait for elective surgery is deemed acceptable by all parties, however in 2011 patients had to wait 9.5 weeks.
The same report noticed that although the government has set up various websites to record wait times, the majority of provinces do not report the portion of waiting time between a referral to a specialist by a general practitioner and consultation with the specialist (Barua & Rovere).
Information collected for use in their statistics came from random surveys of physicians that were asked if their wait lists had increased or decreased since the same time last year. 40% reported an increase and 15% noted a decrease. 44% stated that their list remained the same.
