GLOSSARY
AVERAGE WAIT TIME - This is the average (or mean) length of time a patient waited to have the treatment. A few very short or very long wait times may alter this wait time. The average wait time is calculated by dividing the total number of waiting days that a hospital reported, by the total number of treatments reported during the time period.
BENCHMARK - The standard by which wait times are measured or judged. Surgical wait times are usually compared at the 50th and 90th percentile of patients receiving care within the benchmark time.
MEDIAN WAIT TIME - This is the point at which half the patients have had their treatment and the other half are still waiting. Unlike the average wait time, the median wait time is not affected by one or two very unusual cases (long or short). Therefore, it is more stable over time.
TREND - A 10 or more point increase or decrease in the percentage of patients receiving care within the benchmark from the baseline year. The proportion is considered unchanged if the difference is less than 10 points.
WAIT LIST - A wait list is a list of people who need special medical care. This list helps doctors decide who gets treatment first.
WAIT TIME - A wait time is the amount of time you have to wait for your surgery or exam. Your wait is measured from the time your surgery or exam is booked until the time you receive it. If you need several surgeries or exams for your condition, each one may have its own wait time.
